American School, Reportedly New England, c. 1800 Mourning Picture: "A Mother at the Grave of her Child." Unsigned, titled in ink inscription below painting. Watercolor on paper, 9 x 7 in., in a period, black-painted, molded wood frame. Condition: Minor toning, otherwise good. Provenance: Retains a paper label from the American Folk Art Gallery, New York, indicating it was from the Mergentine collection in May of 1945.
