IN MANNER OF THOMAS LE CLEAR, NA [1818-82] OIL ON CANVAS, C. 1860, 26 1/2" X 34", NEW YORK STATE SCE:26 1/2" x 34". Small boy standing on a crate, newspaper on the street reads "Buffalo"; unsigned; framed. Thomas Le Clear was born in 1818 at Oswego, New York and died in Rutherford, N.J. in 1882. See obituary in New York Times Nov 28, 1882. jw Provenance of painting: family owned from before 1929, it was most likely purchased by the owner's grandmother Lucy Millard (Beaumont), who died in 1929 (and made buying trips to Europe), but after his grandfather, Dr. Beaumont, died in 1890. Passed on then to the consignor's father, Joseph M. Wilbur, and upon his death in 1960 was passed on to the consignor's mother, Helen Black, from whom the consignor inherited it upon his mother's death in 1985. The consignor's family were tenants on a plantation which burned down in 1943 and from which the painting was saved. (rev.20071212)
