American School/Albany, New York Area, 19th Century Portrait of Three Children , 1835-1845. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, the interior scene depicts a young boy in a black and white trousers suit seated on a plain wooden square-legged chair with one arm resting on a red wool covered table with books, his other arm around his sister who wears a lace-trimmed red dress accented by a coral necklace, with sheer white pantaloons above her square-toed beige slippers, and a baby girl seated on the floor, who wears a white dress and a coral necklace, and has removed one stocking and shoe; the genre scene is composed on a painted floor or floorcloth composed of alternating grain and white stylized diamonds, sight size 33 3/4 x 26 7/8 in., in original giltwood frame. Condition: Painting restored, frame with minor loss. Note: This painting was found in the Albany/Oneonta, Hudson River Valley area of New York, where it is presumed to have been painted.
