Pair of Embroidered Rank Badges, China, 19th/20th century, depicting a peacock signifying the third civil rank, surrounded by stylized clouds, waves, and a lishui border, 11 x 11 3/4 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner.
