Pair of Embroidered Rank Badges, China, 19th century, depicting a quail, signifying the eighth civil rank, with a red sun and a background of the Buddhist emblems, scrolls, and clouds in couched gold thread, 10 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner.
