Pair of Embroidered Rank Badges, China, 19th/20th century, depicting a long-tailed flycatcher, signifying the ninth civil rank, surrounded by bats, clouds, and peaches, with stylized waves below, 11 x 11 1/2 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner. Estimate $400-600 Badges lightly stitched together, some couched gold border threads loose. Very minor stain to body of one bird. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
