Attributed to James Fulton Pringle (Anglo-American, 1788-1847) A British Clipper Ship Firing at a Schooner in Heavy Seas. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 17 x 23 in., in a gilt frame. Condition: Lined, retouched, minor losses, craquelure. N.B. This lot is sold together with a ceramic plate, whereon the image is reproduced. Pringle settled in Brooklyn, New York, and painted primarily marine works, executing commissions for shipbuilders and owners. The collections of the New York Historical Society, the Peabody-Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and the Mariner's Museum in Virginia, among others, include examples of this artist's work. A catalogue raisonne of Pringle's work was begun in the 1970s.
