Attributed to Chester Harding (Paris, Kentucky, St. Louis, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Northampton, Massachusetts, 1792-1866) Portrait of Daniel Drake Carter , 1861-1865. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, Versailles Kentucky, at age 16, the half-length portrait depicts Daniel Carter wearing his Confederate uniform, about four years later, he became a medical internist; sight size 30 x 25 in., in original gilt frame. Condition: Laid down on Masonite, some retouch. Note: Daniel is depicted in the right foreground of the following family genre scene, Sunday Morning in the Kitchen . Provenance: Dr. Daniel Drake Carter's parents were Joseph Coleman Arter and Margaret Crockett Carlyle Carter, who lived in 18th century Williamsburg, Virginia. They migrated from Virginia to Woodford County, Kentucky. Margaret Crockett Carlyle was a cousin to Davy Crockett. Note: Chester Harding, a portrait artist, came to join his brother in Paris, Kentucky, from Massachusetts in 1817 and spent three years in Kentucky enjoying artistic success. He went to London to study and subsequently returned to Richmond, Virginia, and Kentucky.
