Attributed to Chester Harding (Massachusetts, 1792-1866) Lot of two: Portraits of Mr. and Mrs. David Stoddard Greenough III of Roxbury, Massachusetts. Unsigned, artist and subjects identified in label and inscriptions on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 36 x 28 in., in late 20th century molded gilt gesso frames. Condition: Both relined with scattered retouch. Provenance: Purchased directly from the estate of Hamilton and Helen Greenough of Santa Barbara, California, May 30, 1998. allover minor spots of scattered retouch, minimal retouch to faces. Inscription on back of woman reads: Mrs. David Stoddard Greenough II, (Maria Foster Doane 1793-1843) of Roxbury (Jamaica Plain) Mass. By Chester Harding. (signed) Hamilton P. Greenough, Santa Barbara, California. 1979. The gentleman is similarly inscribed although no birth- death dates.
