Attributed to Chester Harding (Boston and Northampton, Massachusetts, 1792-1866) Portrait of a Seated Gentleman, c. 1840. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, the man's white shirt and dark waistcoat contrast with the red upholstered fabric on the seating furniture, in a molded giltwood frame, 29 1/2 x 24 1/4 in. Condition: Unlined, retouch to background. Note: Chester Harding worked in St. Louis until 1821, when he returned East and spent time in Washington, D.C., Boston, and Northampton, Massachusetts, before going to London in 1823 to improve his artistic skills. After returning to this country, he settled first in Boston, then moved to Springfield, Massachusetts.
