American, 19th century. A fine mahogany and shellwork sailor's Valentine box, probably from Barbados, having a hinged octagonal case, the top inlaid with an a eight petal flower within multiple inlaid borders opening to an interior fitted multicolor Caribbean shell designs graduating to a ornate heart motif with circular inscription 'FOR MY BELOVED'. The interior lid lined with silk. Locking mechanism and key present.
