Large Sterling Stag Head Soup Tureen, 1860-69, retailed by Shreve, Stanwood & Co. , Boston, no maker's mark, ovoid, the slightly domed lid with ring-form handle topped by a hops finial, centered by a stag head, and with beaded accenting, with leaftip and beaded rims, with bold cast stag head handles to each end, on conforming oval trumpet foot, engraved to one side EAF, ht. 13 3/4, wd. to handles 18 1/2 in., approx. 85 troy oz. Note: Monogrammed for Ellen Amelia Frost, the daughter of Rufus S. Frost, the fifth Mayor of Chelsea, Massachusetts, from 1867-68, a Massachusetts State Senator from 1871-72, and a member of the 45th Congress from 1875-76. This tureen was likely given to Amelia on the occasion of her marriage to Rufus Frost Greeley on June 16, 1869. good with a few light, scattered pinpoints.
