French School, 18th Century Portrait of a Gentleman in Armor with Ermine Unsigned, inscribed "... Pinxit Anno 1731" on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 30 5/8 x 25 1/8 in. (77.8 x 64.0 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, small pinholes, paint loss, abrasions, varnish inconsistencies, craquelure, surface grime. An inscription on the back of the canvas has been painted over rendering it only partially legible. The approximate text is, "Ser.....Christianus/Ludovicns/Dux Megapolitanus, Princeps/.../Pinxit Anno 1731" There are two small pinholes through the canvas. Small paint losses,one on the sitter's chin, and one l.l. side. Abrasion from frame liner along u.l. side.
