John Martin (British, 1789-1854) Satan in Council, 1824. Titled and identified within the plate. Mezzotint on paper, sheet size 22 3/8 x 30 1/4 in. (56.8 x 76.7 cm), matted, unframed. Condition: Staining, losses and repairs to edges. The image (without the text) measures 18 3/4 x 27 1/2 inches. There are tears and losses to the margins (some repaired, but not all), as well as handling creases. Most (but not all) of these latter are unpressed, and many affect the image. One of these unpressed creases is a vertical line to the left of Satan's outstretched and, and these has subtle corresponding surface rubs along its entire length. There are other much smaller rubs as well.
