Portrait Miniature of Mary Wanton Saltonstall Coit, American School, c. 1835, unsigned, sitter identified in inscriptions on backing paper, watercolor on ivory, half-length oval portrait, 2 3/4 x 2 1/4 in., in a period molded wood frame with gilt-brass mat, (very good). Note: Mary Wanton Saltonstall was born March 14, 1767, in New London, Connecticut, the daughter of Winthrop and Ann Saltonstall. She married Dr. Thomas Coit, Jr. (b. 1767), on November 29, 1789, and resided in New London. They were the parents of Dr. Thomas Winthrop Coit, D.D., a noted Episcopalian minister who was among the foremost of scholars in the Episcopal church, and author of several works in defense of its doctrines and position.
