Portrait Miniature of Mary Orne Tucker, attributed to Nathaniel Hancock, (active 1792-1809), unsigned, inscribed on verso "Mary Orne Tucker (first) wife of Ichabod Tucker/Painted by Hancock," watercolor on ivory, c. 1805 on ivory, 2 1/2 x 2 in., housed loosely in a hinged red leather case. Condition: Very good. Note: Nathaniel Hancock's miniature are characteristically painted with stippled brushstrokes, the subjects with a dark line forming the shadow alongside the nose and narrow sloping shoulders, diagonally hatched backgrounds from right to left, all evident in this portrait. He worked in the Salem, Massachusetts, area from 1805-09, where many members of the Orne families resided.
