Attributed to René Antoine Houasse (French, born c. 1645-1710) Two Framed Architectural Drawings: Italian Rooftops and Ruins with Obelisk . Unsigned, both stamped with a crowned D, the collector's mark of the Scottish Earl of Dalhousie, l.c. and l.l., respectively. Ink and wash on paper, sight size to 13 1/2 x 20 1/4 in., (34.3 x 51.0 cm), framed. Condition: Both with scattered foxing and staining, Rooftops with crease or repaired tear to u.r. quadrant, not examined out of frames. Provenance: Collection of the Earl of Dalhousie through to P. and D. Colnaghi & Co., London, purchased from Colnaghi, then by family descent. N.B. In Les Marques de Collection de Dessins & d'Estampes , Frits Lugt provides some history on the collection of the Earl of Dalhousie. The crowned D is L.717a in Lugt's book. The mark appears on two albums of drawings featuring Dutch and Italian works that were acquired by P. and D. Colnaghi & Company, London, in 1922. Other works from the collection were sold at Sotheby's in London on February 23, 1955. Rene Antoine Houasse was a student of Charles Le Brun. He was made a member of the French National Academy in 1673, and rose to be Director of the Royal Academy around 1700. He also went to Spain at the request of monarchs Charles II and later Philip V. In 1704 Houasse became director of the Academy in Rome.
