After Sir Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, 1599-1641) Antoine Triest, Bishop of Ghent Unsigned, identified on a partial printed label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 23 1/4 x 19 1/4 in. (59.0 x 48.5 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: Canvas trimmed and lined, minor retouch, fine stable craquelure, minor surface grime. Provenance: A gift to Dr.Vernon David and Mrs. Marguerite (Record) David of Chicago, c. 1920, then by descent to the present owner. N.B. Antoine Triest was a notable collector and friend of artists such as van Dyck, and it is likely that Triest sat for van Dyck on multiple occasions. An original portrait of Triest by van Dyck, on which this head and shoulders copy may be based, is now in the collection of the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, owns a miniature of the portrait, also a head and shoulders view, done in watercolor by Charles Beale, the younger. Interestingly, it has been suggested that Beale worked from an oil copy belonging to his father, who referred in his diary to "my bishop's picture of Van Dyke's," suggesting that copies of the portrait of this esteemed individual were popular with contemporary audiences. Currently attributed to Charles Beale, as well, is a copy in red chalk (head only) in the collection of the British Museum. The portrait was also popularized as an engraving.
