Charlestown, New Hampshire, Needlework Sampler, "Lucretia Walker/aged 9 years/Charlestown/Sept. 21, 1803," wrought with silk threads on a linen canvas, depicting rows of alphabets over a scene of a man and woman standing beside a Federal-style house, with a tree in the yard, surrounded on three sides with an undulating flowering vine, with a diamond border on the bottom, (toning, fading), 12 1/2 x 16 1/2 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Note: Lucretia Walker was the third child of six, born August 10, 1796, to Jabez and Anna (nee Watkins) of Charlestown, New Hampshire. Lucretia married Roswell Hodgkins September 26, 1819, and resided in Charlestown where Roswell was a farmer, and had four children. The back of the frame contains an envelope with two pieces of paper: one inscribed with a short genealogy of the family, and an 1855 dated marriage certificate of Roswell and Lucretia's daughter Louisa Hodgkins to James Pierce; and an embroidered silk handkerchief reportedly belonging to Louisa.
