Harte, Bret. The Heathen Chinee. Boston: James R. Osgood & Co., 1871. Publisher’s pictorial orange wraps. Illustrated with eight engraved plates by S. Eytinge, Jr. 8vo. 21pp. Minor short tears and chips, else good. The first edition in this format, published after the poem first appeared in The Overland Monthly Magazine. Harte later referred to the hugely popular poem as “trash,” in part because it fueled anti-Chinese sentiment rather than succeed in parodying it, as appears to have been the intention.
