Presentation Sword Identified to Colonel Louis Henry Marshall, c. mid to late 1860s, ornate gilt-brass hilt with a silver-washed grip, back of the counter-guard has flags with a central shield engraved "L.H.M.," ricasso marked "PETTIBONE," blade engraved with foliate designs, eagles, and other patriotic motifs, steel scabbard with gilt brass fittings, and the top band engraved with an eagle. Note: Marshall graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1849, serving frontier duty as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Infantry in New Mexico until 1855. He served as a Captain in the 10th Infantry in Utah and the Dakota's until the outbreak of the Civil War. From August 1861 until July 1865 he served as aide-de-camp to General John Pope, and after the war served in Washington and Idaho with the 14th and 23rd Infantry until his resignation on November 23, 1868. He died in 1891 in California. Estimate $800-1,200 Some of the gilt and silver is worn, but in overall good condition. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
