Harry Jackson (American, 1924-2011) Trail Boss Initialed "H. J." and numbered "7/10" on the side of the bronze base, titled on a presentation plaque. Bronze with a green/brown patina, height 8 1/4 in. (21.0 cm), on a painted wood plinth. Condition: Dust and dirt to interstices. Provenance: The collection of Joseph Thomas Alvarez III, California. N.B. Dating to 1958, Trail Boss is the second sculpture that Harry Jackson ever made and the first to be cast in bronze. He created the model in wax in a single night of intense work. This fully-developed portrait of an individual horse and rider would serve as one of the pivotal figures in both the painting and the sculpture known as Range Burial (see Lot 75). The rider is the boss of the trail herd that stampeded, killing a young cowboy, and, pausing at this somber moment, he has removed his hat in a sign of respect at the burial. Estimate $2,000-3,000 Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
