The Five Senses Stumpwork Picture, England, 17th century, stitched in silk and metallic threads on a silk background depicting the five senses in oval vignettes against a background of flowers, fruit trees, birds, and animals, framed, ht. 23 1/2, wd. 28 in. Provenance: Cora Ginsburg, Tarrytown, New York, March 1980, illustrated in Benjamin Ginsburg advertisement, The Magazine Antiques, March 1980, p. 491; Irwin Untermeyer Collection. Estimate $2,000-4,000 There are some minor thread losses, especially the borders around the "five senses" figures. There are also about 5 small holes, none bigger than a 1/2 inch round. The frame appears to be old, possibly original, the glass appears new. Not acid-free preserved - the gray-blue backing paper goes right up to the back of the work. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact.
