Frank Weston Benson (American, 1862-1951) Two Proof Impressions of Canvasbacks, 1926, proofs A-7 and B-3 (Paff, 261). Both signed "FrankWBenson." in pencil l.l. and with pencil annotations l.l. Etchings on laid paper (different watermarks), plate sizes 5 7/8 x 11 3/4 in. (14.8 x 29.8 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Deckled upper edge to A, unobtrusive soiling and handling creases to margins of A. Provenance: Descended within the family of the artist. N.B. Paff describes only one trial state, so the impression marked B-3, which shows the completed composition, may in fact be a trial of the published state. Estimate $600-800 A- sheet size 11 1/8 x 16 3/4 inches. A- Ink fingerprints, minor loss to paper deckles at upper edge, inscribed "80" in ink on the verso. B- sheet size 8 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches. B- J Whatman paper with watermark along the u.r. edges, extremely minor handling creases, ink fingerprints and pale smudges from the artist's process, erased pencil inscription "175.00" to lower edge at center.
