Benjamin Stancliffe Vernier Compass, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 6-in. dia. silvered dial marked "B. Stancliffe Philada/Warranted," (lacking needle), vernier with adjustment and needle lifter on underside, dual spirit levels, tripod mount, and sighting vanes. Provenance: Christie's, November 29, 1990, Lot 202. Note: Benjamin Stancliffe emigrated from England where he had trained, and was active in Philadelphia from about 1817 until his death in 1832 or 1833.
