Knox & Shain Wye Level for W. B. Throop, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, no. 916, original lacquered instrument with 16-in. scope, fine focusing knob, and spirit level below, main arm engraved "Knox & Shain/Maker/Philadelphia/No. 916," housed in a fitted mahogany box with hand-painted gilt lettering reading "Valuable Instruments/With Care/W.B. Throop." Note: Knox was the foreman in Young's shop and Charles J. Shain was an apprentice of Young before going in business together as Knox & Shain in 1851. The firm continued under their management until 1891 when Charles J. Shain passed. The firm continued until 1929.
