The Articles of Confederation; The Declaration of Rights; The Constitution of this Commonwealth, and the Articles of the Definitive Treaty Between Great-Britain and the United States of America. Richmond, Virginia: Dixon and Holt, 1784. First edition, octavo, uncut and unopened, stab stitched in the original wallpaper wrappers, text crisp, housed in a custom blue cloth chemise and slipcase, 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 in. This important Richmond imprint contains four fundamental documents: the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union ; the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights (largely the work of George Mason, the model for Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence, several state constitutions, and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man); the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia; and the Definitive Treaty between the United States and Great Britain (ending the Revolutionary war and making full acknowledgment of American independence). It is likely that this publication was produced for use of the members of the Virginia legislature, whose seat had recently moved from Williamsburg to Richmond.
