After Thomas Marie Hemy (British, 1852-1937). "Loss of the Birkenhead", hand colored lithograph, pencil signed lower right "Thomas M. Hemy", published by Henry Graves & Co. on May 15, 1893. Lithograph depicts a view of the crashed ship on February 26, 1852 near Capetown, South Africa. The "women and children first" protocol was born during this incident as the British soldiers aboard stood beside and allowed the women and children on the ship to board the few lifeboats that were serviceable. Panicking women and children are seen to the right of the tilted ship as uniformed soldiers stay left, away from the life boats. Inscribed with publishing details above image, and below image with printed drawing of artist beside pencil signature. Framed approximately 46 1/2" x 38 3/4", sight size approximately 27" x 19 1/2".
