Continental School, 19th century. "Portrait of a Knighted Nobleman", reverse painted on glass (verre églomisé), apparently unsigned. Figural bust portrait painting of a knighted nobleman in regal robes, bearing the emblem of the Order of the Garter. Framed approximately 17.125" x 13". Unframed 15.1" x 10.6". Note: The Order of the Garter is the highest of the orders of chivalry British, founded by King Edward III on the day of Saint George in 1348 (during the Hundred Years War). The order is a knighthood appointed directly by the reigning monarch. Their motto "honi soit qui mal y pense"--featured on the emblem of the order--translates in modern French to "evil be to him who evil thinks."
