Samuel Green Wheeler Benjamin (American, 1837-1914) "Off Cape Race. " Signed "S.G.W. Benjamin" l.l., identified on Boston Art Club 1878 exhibition label on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 17 1/2 x 3 1/2 in., in a gilt gesso frame. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, craquelure. N.B. The Cape Race depicted here may be that which lies on the southeast coast of Newfoundland. Cape Race represented the first landfall for ships sailing from Europe to North America, and is known for dense fog, arctic ice, and unpredictable weather. The Titanic is included among the many wrecks that have occurred off its shoreline.
