Confederate Second National Garrison Flag, 1863-65, with cotton stars on wool canton, white field constructed of bunting strips and rope gromets, 10 x 15 feet (large area of loss in lower right corner, moth damage and tears). Provenance: Major William Harold Bird, Company B, First Delaware Calvary, and thence by descent. Bird joined the Regiment in 1863 and was a First Lieutenant by 1864, being promoted Captain by brevet on April 2, 1865 and Major soon afterwords. He fought in a number of battles, Cold Harbor, First and Second Petersburg and Appomattox among them. He also served as Aide de Camp to Gen. Upton who is quoted as saying "Will Bird was teh bravest soldier of all who served under me." A copy of a photograph of Bird in the field accompanies the lot.
