23kt Gold Brooch, signed Max Ernst, maker's mark for Francois Hugo, Aix en Provence, 4 of 6, February 1975, original wood velvet-lined box. Note: Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a founding member of the Dada and Surrealist movements in Cologne and Paris. He worked in a wide range of styles and media. This work resembles his technique of "grattage", which involved the scraping or troweling of pigment from canvas.
