Rare Concertino Longue Marche Musical Box, No. 22, with 13 x 3 1/8-inch cylinder playing six operatic and dance airs by Donizetti, Rossini, Bizet, and others, quadruple-spring motor and intermediate wheel, silvered plaque engraved "This Musical Box Is Guaranteed To Play 2 1/2 Hours When Once Fully Wound Up, Manger, Patantee, Geneve," in crossbanded walnut case with maple-lined lid inlaid in front and on top, ormolu carrying handles and detachable ratchet-lever, wd. 30 1/2 in. Note: The center of the cylinder appears to be pinned for mandolin expression. These types of musical boxes were also known as Dinner Boxes as they were found suitable for playing during dinners, the large spring assuring continuous music without the need for constant winding. It is unlikely that John Manger & Co. constructed this box, as they tended to be wholesalers as well as makers. Paillard is a likely candidate.
