Frederic Remington (American, 1861-1909) Whipping in the Straggler Signed "-REMINGTON-" l. r., label from Cooley Gallery, Connecticut, on the reverse. Pen and ink with watercolor and gouache (en grisaille) on paper, sight size 13 1/4 x 7 3/4 in. (33.6 x 19.6 cm), framed. Condition: Foxing, not examined out of frame. Provenance: A private Washington DC collection, circa 1930. Published: Harper's Weekly , November 28, 1891, page 933. Peter H. Hassrick and Melissa J. Webster's Frederic Remington, A Catalogue Raisonne of Paintings, Watercolors and Drawings (Buffalo Bill Historic Center; Cody, Wyoming, 1996) entry 1308. N.B. In discussing this work Hassrick and Webster note that "in a November 20, 1891 letter to Powhatan Clarke, Remington wrote that he did a page on hunting with the Westchester hounds. The article subsequently appeared in Harper's Weekly ".
