This work is one of ten illustrations made by Remington to accompany "The American Calvary School" by Lieutenant George I. Putman, published in Harper's Weekly , June 4, 1892; this image was reproduced as a halftone on p. 541. The Remington catalogue raisonné entry states that Remington sent the set of drawings to Harper's editor, Fred B. Schell, with a cover letter dated November 14, 1891, although the drawings were published the following year. The title on the drawing refers to the young cavalry officer emerging from his training, as the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. In his cover letter, Remington referred to Putman's article as "A Cavalry Colonel in the Chrysalis."
