Sailor-Made Inlaid Mahogany Tall Case Clock Watch Hutch, America, late 18th or early 19th century, carved ivory ball finials flanking a scrolled cornice on bonnet with inlaid ivory stars, and an abalone hemisphere with baleen crescent, above a round aperture revealing an engraved whalebone dial, flanked by whalebone inlaid corners, and enclosed with whalebone stringing; the waist with abalone and whalebone square, diamond, and lozenge inlaid motifs, whalebone stringing outlining "doors"; the base with whalebone molding and centered with intersecting inlaid whalebone and baleen diamonds, enclosed in whalebone stringing, raised on shaped bracket whalebone feet, (a few repairs), ht. 16 3/8, wd. 3 5/8, dp. 3 1/2 in.
