Pewter Quart Flagon, Thomas D. and Sherman Boardman, Hartford, Connecticut, c. 1815-20, disk finial on domed, molded cover with "chairback" thumbpiece above a tapered cylindrical body with fillet, scroll handle with bud terminal, molded base, "TD & SB" in a rectangle and "X" quality mark, [Celia Jacobs 150], ht. 9 in. Note: John Carl Thomas commented on this flagon in 1993. "On this example you can look under the foot on the bottom and see the line where they added the extension to the base casting. It does not show on all examples, which is an "added attraction" here (I always like it when a piece tells you a little story as you examine it). They also added a third "dome" to the lid, as in this example when the flagon was to be fitted with a finial, you will note from the underside you see only the original two dome steps. As I had mentioned to you I believe this is one of the earlier examples of these as it is simply marked TD & SB with the quality mark, not with the eagles that they used a short time later. In addition, the moldings just seem a little bit "cleaner" and earlier to me... I guess you can tell that I really like this one! The "distress" on the inside bottom is the only blemish...and that caused by not completely cleaning out the wine after each use...not much of a detriment."
