Attributed to Erastus Salisbury Field (Massachusetts, 1805-1900) Portrait of an Elegantly Dressed Lady. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1835, depicting the lady with upswept brown hair with cascading curls, gold and jet jewelry, a white dress with lace trimmed neckline and sleeves, holding a book, one arm resting on a table with one hand holding a pen, the other holds a paper, 37 1/2 x 31 1/2 in., in a later black painted oak frame with gilt liner. Condition: Canvas applied to plywood panel, repaired tear with retouch lower center, two surface abrasion lines, craquelure. Note: This painting reflects some of the characteristics that Erastus Field is well known for, such as the gray, cloud-like background, the use of black dots to portray lace patterns, a stiff frontal pose, the figures with a short waist and narrow shoulders, and knuckles suggested with dots of pink and flesh colored pigments. the painting appears to be coming loose from the backing on a few small areas of the edging, surface abrasion lines- one under her left facing eye and one lower chin
