Attributed to Erastus Salisbury Field (Massachusetts, 1805-1900) Pair of Portraits of a Lady and a Gentleman. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1835, depicting the lady wearing a lace bonnet, gold necklace, and black dress, holding a book, the gentleman wearing a black jacket with high collar, white shirt and stock, his hand on a book of music resting on a table, 30 x 24 and 30 x 23 in., in molded gilt gesso frames. Condition: Relined, scattered paint losses and retouch. Note: These paintings reflect some of the characteristics that Erastus Field is well known for such as gray, cloud-like backgrounds, the use of black dots to portray lace patterns, stiff frontal poses, figures with short waists and narrow shoulders, and knuckles suggested with dots of pink and flesh colored pigments.
