One Finger Artist (American, Early 19th Century) Pair of Memorial Pictures. Unsigned. Watercolor and ink on paper, one picture depicting a gentleman with a walking stick leaning his elbow on an urn-topped and garland draped monument inscribed "To the memory of the lamented wife & children of Edward Hancox." over a verse, with a weeping willow cascading behind, in a riverside landscape; the other picture shows a woman dressed in black, one hand hangs by her side with her first digit pointing downward, her other arm leans against a similar garland draped monument with a pious verse inscribed on it, with her other first digit pointing upward, painted with a similar riverside background, 10 1/8 x 8 in., in period Chinese gilt gesso and wood frames. Condition: Toning, light moisture stains. Provenance: Frank and Barbara Pollack. Note: These memorial pictures originated in Rhode Island.
