Attributed to J. Evans (American, Early 19th century) Portrait of a Gentleman Holding a Top Hat. Indistinctly inscribed with conjoined initials l.r. corner. Watercolor on thin card, c. 1825, 11 1/2 x 6 1/8 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Light toning, minor foxing, small separation of u.r. corner. Note: The artist J. Evans worked in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Boston-Roxbury areas of Massachusetts. He usually rendered his portraits full-length and in profile. The small triangular corner separation piece (about 1/2 x 1/3 in. and hidden by frame), retained in a small plastic bag behind backing.
