American School, 19th Century Portrait of the USS Pennsylvania. Unsigned. oil on canvas, 27 x 34 in., in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Edges trimmed, tears, surface grime, craquelure. Note: The first USS Pennsylvania was a three-decked 120 gun ship of the line of the United States Navy. She was the largest sailing warship ever built for the Navy, designed and built by Samuel Humphreys in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. She had three complete gun decks and a flush spar-deck and her hull was pierced for 136 guns. She was launched July 18, 1837 and remained in ordinary until 1842 when she became a receiving ship for the Norfolk Navy Yard. She remained in the yard until April 20, 1861 when she was burned to the waterline to prevent her falling into Confederate hands. All four edges have been trimmed and canvas put on a stretcher, four tears: 1 in. at c.l. on sail, 1 1/2 in. with scratch at center just below center on sail, two small tears l.l. and l.c. a couple small paint l.r. , line at left along stretcher.
