American School, 19th Century Portrait Miniature of Juliet Ann (Opie) Hopkins. Unsigned. Watercolor On ivory, 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 in., unframed. Condition: Very good. Provenance: By family decent. Note: According to a note taken from family history inscriptions kept with the miniature: "Juliet Ann (Opie) Hopkins married Judge Arthur Francis Hopkins- confederate heroine- born 1818, died March 9, 1890-Buried in Arlington Cemetery. Nov. 30th 1971." Juliet Ann Hopkins was known as the "Florence Nightingale of the South." She was born in Jefferson County, Virginia, on May 7, 1818. In 1837 she married Commodore Alexander Gordon, (he died in 1849), and later married Judge Arthur F. Hopkins in 1854. During the Civil War, she was a nurse and was wounded while rescuing casualties at the Battle of Seven Pines. Her portrait appeared on the 25-cent piece and the fifty-dollar bills issued by Alabama in the Civil War. She established hospitals in Richmond, Virginia, and the Matron Alabama Hospitals.
