Attributed to Nicholas S. Cammiliere, (Maltese, active 1819-56) Portrait of the Ship Cherub of Boston. Unsigned, inscriptions below reading "CHERUB of Boston, CHAS. JONES, Master, saving the Crew of the Jersey Schooner, WAR OAK. Lat42.20' North Long 20.30' West." Oil on paper laid down onto linen, 16 1/2 x 21 7/8 in, unframed. Condition: A few paint losses in the sky. Note: The Cherub was built in Boston in 1816 or 1817. She was owned by John J. Putnam of Boston. She weighed 173 70/95 tons, was 82 ft. 4 in. lg., and Charles Jones was Master in 1832. Provenance: A Massachusetts institution.
