Benjamin E. Shute (American (Georgia/ Wisconsin), 1905-1986). "Snow on the Cow Farm", watercolor on paper, signed lower left. Landscape painting depicting a cow farm during winter with the residential houses in white and red brick to right behind a wooden fence and the tall wooden farmhouse to left with many black cows gathered out front of it behind a cluster of tall evergreen trees, a large field fills foreground of composition and holds a doghouse at right. Framed approximately 24.5" x 30.5", sight size approximately 17.5" x 23.5".Note: Ben Shute (American, 1905-1986) was an artist, arts advocate and co-founder of the Atlanta College of Art. Shute trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then moved to Atlanta in 1928 to work temporarily for the High Museum School of Art in a teaching capacity. His position and efforts with the High Museum School of Art were long lasting--he worked at the institution for approximately six decades, and helped build the art school's reputation through its national accreditation. In the mid 1940s, Shute established the Southeastern Annual Exhibition that showcased work from 9 states in the Southern region. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York, Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, and Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. In 1985, the artist was awarded the Governor's Award in the Arts for Georgia.
