Benjamin Edgar Shute (American (Georgia/ Wisconsin), 1905-1986). "The Lighthouse" - 1980, watercolor and ink on paper, signed and dated lower left. "Seagulls", graphite on paper, signed upper left. "The Lighthouse" depicting a coastal scene with high sand dune at center topped by a white clap board structure with light house at right, the house topped by three resting seagulls with two more birds at flight above the structure, the sea in view at right and storm clouds appearing above. "Seagulls" depicting three sea birds in flight above a beach with sand dunes to foreground and darkened sea beyond. "Lighthouse framed approximately 25.25" x 31.25", sight size approximately 17.5" x 23.625". "Seagulls" framed approximately 13" x 16", sight size 8.875" x 11.625". Note: Ben Shute (American, 1905-1986) was an artist, arts advocate and co-founder of the Atlanta College of Art. Shute trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then moved to Atlanta in 1928 to work temporarily for the High Museum School of Art in a teaching capacity. His position and efforts with the High Museum School of Art were long lasting--he worked at the institution for approximately six decades, and helped build the art school's reputation through its national accreditation. In the mid 1940s, Shute established the Southeastern Annual Exhibition that showcased work from 9 states in the Southern region.
