Wilfred Croteau (American, b. 1930) #44 , c. 1958 Signed and titled "CROTEAU..." and identified on labels from Carl Siembab Gallery, and the Pittsburgh International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting and Sculpture (see below) on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 35 x 46 in., framed. Condition: Craquelure, surface grime. Exhibitions: 1958 Philadelphia International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting and Sculpture, December 4, 1958 to February 8, 1959. Note: Wilfred Croteau was born in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1930. After studying art in Boston, he went to Paris in 1954 and studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. During this period, he associated with many American and European artists such as Sam Francis, Karel Appel, John Hultberg, Kumi Sugai, Atsuko Tanaka, and Antoni Tapies. While in Paris, his own style of abstract expressionism evolved. He was involved in many group shows and in 1957 had his first one-man show at the Galerie Crueze in Paris.
