Tavernier à Paris, No. 909, with the Paris hallmarks for 1775.Very fine and extremely rare 20K gold watch with special escapement. Double body, Louis XVI, polished with diamond set thumb pieces. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute ring. Diamond set Louis XVI hands. Hinged gilt brass full plate with conical pillars, fusee with chain, dead-beat verge escapement with short pallets, the crown wheel with external teeth. Plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass continental cock with ruby end-stone.Signed on the dial and back plate.Diam. 45 mm. Notes Described and illustrated by A. Grenaud in L’histoire des échappements et leur évolution, this highly unusual escapement was apparently made to reduce the friction of the escape wheel teeth on the pallets.
