Attributed to Thomas Sully (Pennsylvania/England, 1783-1872) Portrait of Louisa Catherine Carroll (1809-? ) and Her Child. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, circular portrait, dia. 27 1/2 in., in a period carved and gilded frame. Condition: Relined, retouch. Provenance: By family descent to the consignor. Exhibitions: The Baltimore Museum of Art, Anywhere So Long As There Be Freedom: Charles Carroll of Carrollton, His Family & His Maryland, September 30--November 30, 1975. The portrait is illustrated and discussed in the exhibition catalog, pp. 262-3 Note: Louisa Catherine Carroll was born October 2, 1809, the sixth child of Charles and Harriet (Chew) Carroll. Charles was the son of Charles Carroll III, a delegate to the Continental Congress and Confederation Congress, and later was the first United States Senator for Maryland, and also a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Her mother, Harriet Chew Carroll, was daughter of Chief Justice Samuel Chew of Philadelphia. Louisa was married to Isaac Rand Jackson in 1833 and they had five children.
