A group of two books, both rebound in library buckram. Chicago: Published by the Academy, 1869. Volume I. Part II. Engraved portrait of Kennicott, no plates, pp. 133-226. Represents extracts from Kenicott's journals. Chipping and marginal browning to first few pages, including portrait of Kenicott; book plate tipped in front pastedown of W. L. Necker, an associate of the Academy. Norman Bridge, recorder. W.L.N., n.d. (1893) Thick 4to. 286 typescript pages. According to the preamble, all of the original records of the Chicago Academy of Sciences were destroyed by the Great Fire of 1871. The present volume consists of restored records, as far as could be made possible from "published documents, newspaper files and the memory of the Members." An essential resource - no other copies have been located - for the history of this important institution. p. 8, for example, lists all of the "Life Members" of the Academy as of September 20, 1864. With numerous pastedown articles and autographed notes (see pp. 82, 128, 132, 170, 205, 212).
